Well, I am so not a pet person. And of course the kids want pets. Will knows that I am allergic to cats and dogs (at least the ones that shed), so he is always suggesting other creatures we could have. He has even gone as far as telling people we have a pet lizard, just because they live wildly in our yard.
Well, we had discussed possibly getting a desert tortoise. They are super easy to take care of and they hibernate half of the year. We never finalized for sure getting one, but yesterday when Buddy was working out in Yuma, he was able to get two little baby desert tortoises. And he called me on his way home and said "guess what?" Anyway, they are super cute. We have to keep them inside for about three years, and then after that, we can just let them roam around in the backyard.
They will live about 80 - 100 years, and you don't own a desert tortoise, you are a custodian. So now we have two new little babies to watch out for.
